UNITED STATES IN JAPAN

Picture
map showing how the USA dominated Japan
Before: United States displayed new miltitary force and sent naval ships to make Japan open open its ports for trade.
              - Japanese leaders did not know how to respond.
-But Japanese leaders wanted them to learn from foreigners, like the United States.
After: Japanese chose to end isolationism to transform itself into a powerful country, but this never happened, it was the opposite.

What exactly happened?!
The USA wanted Japan to open it's shipping ports for the USA.  Japan did not open its ports for the United States until Millard Fillmore, the president at the time sent a letter that Matthew Perry carried in his pocket all the way to Japan. This letter demanded that Japan open its ports to diplomatic and commerical exchange.
Since the United States was so powerful, Japan didn't have the power to fight off the United States. The Treaty of Kanagawa in 1854 opened ports for American ships, but not for trade.  Then,  The USA won trading rights, and putting lower taxes on American goods.
